My win at the Chess tournament

Hey guys, remember how badly I lost the last chess tournament? Well here’s some good news. I got into the chess team this time with four wins! I came in 8th place and am happy to say I only lost a game to the player who came in 2nd place. As you can imagine, I’m pretty eager to tell you about it.
Like last time, I’m gonna explain my thoughts and lessons here. I only have two people to thank for my win. My mom and dad. My mom who recommended me to play against my brother, and my dad who watched many games I played at home and at the tournament. He also gave me tips on how I could do better in the tournament and encouraged me.
My lessons were to never lose hope until everything was over, and to remember to not move before 20 seconds or before I had three alternative moves.
Over this year, I had practiced a lot for the coming chess tournament. Most days, I played 3 or more chess games. If I lost, I would send my game for computer analysis. If I won, I would do the same. Every game I played, I would analyze. I guess all that hard work payed off, because now me and my brother (who came in 5th place, though he believes he is 2nd :-)  are on the chess team. I hope I can get on the team next year too so wish me luck!
Can’t wait to play against other schools; as part of the competitive matches I will go for throughout this year!
Here is a my refresher post from last year: My loss at the Chess tournament.

A Letter to my Parents

  • a letter on back-to-school night

Dear Mom and Dad,
Welcome to my classroom.
I hope you like my desk and
wonderful teacher Ms. Briber.
Also, be sure to look when
Ms. Briber shows you a
slideshow of us.

To see my first writing piece,
look at the bulletin board outside
until you recognize my handwriting
and title. We have a reading
goal. We got past our first one
today,and our next is 15,000
minutes.

We also have class
jobs.I’m the note taker and
record our reading minutes.
Today we also made mini-skits.
They were about good citizenship.
Me and my group did one about
respect. That’s all I want to tell
you because you’ll
learn the rest later.

Love,

Writing Girl

A Super Sled

  • a figment of my imagination!

One cold afternoon, me and my brother decided to go sledding. My brother let me sit in the front for the first ride. We pushed ourselves off and whooshed through the snow. The sled flew in the air, passing the roof as it went. Flying from up here, we could see the whole town. Unfortunately, our sled landed on a strangers roof. Since we were not that far away from home, we directed our sled to our home. We pushed off the roof and our sled landed safely in front of the door. “Whoa” says my mom. “What were you kids up to?” “Nothing” we replied with guilt. “Well then” says mom and hurries inside.

We both got set up to ride again except this time my brother was in front. We both sprinted from a distance and hopped onto the sled. Our sled kicked up snow behind it and disappeared into the mist. Just as our mom came outside with a cup of hot chocolate. “Where are those kids now?” my mom asked out loud. Must be on the far end, she thought. Mom sighed before going inside.

Meanwhile, me and my brother were soaring through town on the sled. When we landed, we were in a stranger’s yard. It was hilly in the yard just like our yard at home. Just as our sled vanished into the dust, a person came out from inside the house. He caught a glimpse of my sleeve and muttered, “ must be those kids who moved in next door.” He called back after us “I’m gonna kill you!” before grumpily going back inside.

Our sled soon landed again and I figured it just had to land in another stranger's yard. The crooked bricks of the house gave me an idea. We climbed up the bricks hastily being aware of angry house owners. My brother threw the sled up to me. We got on and started moving. We landed in yet another house which was not ours.
This one’s roof was flat and there was no hill on the ground. Just as we were about to give up hope, I got an idea. “How about we pile snow on the roof so-” “we can sled off  it.” my brother finished my sentence. We did that and landed right back in our complex. But I fell off the sled and landed on an unsturdy, high tree branch, while my brother zoomed onto the ground!

My brother had a plan. He piled snow high on the tree and then threw the sled to me. Just as the snow was about to collapse, I dropped the sled and it straightened out the snow. Then my brother threw the sled back up to me and I caught it and rode down the snow. This time I zoomed and landed right behind my brother. Together we took the sled and went inside, ready for the hot chocolate waiting for us.
